Hardware / Re: Which HDD 2.5" has minimal power consumption?
« on: 02.06.2005 at 11:33:10 »
2 points:-

1) Although a lower temperature suggests that the drive wastes less energy, I can't see how it means the drive uses less power. Surely the power depends mainly on the motor, i.e. how much it takes to spin up to speed and how long it has to run for.

2) In that picture with the 1A hard drives. That seems quick high, so maybe it means that the power supply should be able to source that current if needed, but i doubt it runs at that the whole time.

Just my 2 cents

Main problem with the Atmel MP3 chips is that (IIRC) they only come in BGA packages so its impossible to solder without the right equipment

Nice case, but it looks as though the buttons would be quite hard to press to that position...

Has anyone acutally made a yammp7 with the joystick avilable in the shop?

I shouldn't really laugh, but some how I don't think that "some iron" is going to do you much good... ...maybe some solder and a soldering iron....

Anyway, this sounds like a great project. I wish there were people giving away iPods where i live! I reckon that it'll be a very tight fit unless the screen you use is really thin.

True. Do you need 2 or 4 channels? (are X+,X- grouped and y+, y- grouped?). What size screens did you use and did you add the touchpanel on top or get an lcd with it already in?

If you've got the circuits lying around then that would be great (I'll IM you my email - don't want spambots getting it)

Thanks for the help

Makes it easier to have a nice user interface etc. and also it looks cool :P . Same really for a color screen, strictly speaking there's no point but its nice to have.

Has any one ever tried this? It doesn't seem too difficult. There are SPI chips (MXB7843) chips which can handle 4 wire touch screens (resistance based). The trouble seems more to be with actually getting touch panels small enough. The best I could find are:-

PS before anyone comments. I know that I have lots of ideas and don't get much done. However, I (think) that I understand most stuff pretty well, its just my construction techniques that I don't have confidence in :X - idealy I'd be able to send my designs off to some shop which would assemble a 1 off for me for less than a ridiculous price

Hardware / Smaller PCB for Yammp 7
« on: 05.02.2005 at 10:10:51 »
I've read several posts where people have said they were designing smaller PCBs for the yampp, but I haven't heard/seen any completed. (Mini Yammp7). Has anyone made a smaller pcb? If not I'll try and design one. However, although I understand most of how the yampps work in 'theory', I have little experience of making projects - especially smd. So I was wondering if someone else could build it for me (I'd obviously pay)?

That's pretty cool! Unlike a lot of other car installs, you've got it nicely integrated so it fits in.

How did you interface on to the main lcd like that? Does BMW publish a standard

You could definately save space by running the AVR at 3.3v as this would mean getting rid of the level convertors. Or would you need some extra ones for the HD? (another reason to get a 1.8" HD...). But if you are really wanting a portable HD player, then there are probably better MCUs around to do the job - with in built USB or IDE. Except for the fact that noone's used it, the AT89C51SND1C would work, you just have to look at the reference design (here) to see the tiny size. And its USB shows up as mass storage like you wanted...

The FAQ could be some kind of wiki (likes run at http://www.mega-tokyo.com/os/) with user contributed info...

Anyway, back to topic?

Thanks, but just to clarify of those 5 results:-
- 1 was this thread
- 1 was in a language that I don't understand
- 1 was a poll which noone voted on or answered
- 1 you'd replied to and told the person to use the search
- The last one mainly disscussed availablity of the chip and the problems with available information and errata in early versions of the chip BUT this was posted in 2003

So, Digikey seem to be selling the chip for £9.95 (cheaper than before), and the docs on the Atmel site say that they've been updated recently. And I was wondering if any one had tried the chip since it was previously disscussed. Someone (a guest called Marc) said that he'd got some samples but didn't mention any success or not, are you still around? Any comments?

Pete

MIC: It always seems to be you who goes and tells people to SEARCH or RTFM etc. And I admit a lot of the time its appropriate but you just seem a bit "trigger happy".

EDIT: Just looked at the Atmel site, and it claims to have updated the datasheet since new year (Revision H)... reading now.

When I said VS1001, I meant the price of the VS1001 and another microcontroller. And also, I had thought the VS1001 was more expensive, ~20euros, so my mistake.

This isn't a Yammp specific h/w question, but as there aren't any general boards around at the moment, I thought this was the best place to post.

Has anyone ever tried this chip (AT89C51SND1C) or any of the other *SND1Cs? It sounds as though its the perfect solution for a mini portable player. It includes:-
- IDE / CompactFlash Interface as well as a MMC interface.
- USB interface which can be used for ISP
- MP3 Decoder (and when the 2C comes out - don't know when, atmel haven't replied to my email yet - also a DAC and amp)
- Very cheap compared to VS1001 - £9.95 from Digikey

I'm interested in trying this product out, but wondering if anyone had any experience.

Pete
